History Hashtag Fan Club Review Idea

What can you do when you need a quick, fun review for your social studies class? Start a history hashtag fan club, of course!

So, how does this review activity work? Here’s what I do for a less than 5 minute set-up:

First, I hang two sheets from my Post-It Super Sticky Wall Easel Pad. I seriously love these gigantic Post-It Notes for the wall. They stay up forever and can be moved frequently without losing their stick.

Second, I give each student one Super Sticky Post-It Note (3 inch x 3 inch) per topic.

Once my display is ready and each student has the correct number of Post-It Notes, we dive right into hashtag creation.

Each student will create one hashtag per topic.

  • Note – This is an exercise in critical thinking and creativity because hashtags are short and to the point… no more than 3, maybe 4 words put together.

Once students have created their hashtags and added their names, they place their sticky notes in the correct chart section.

My students love to read and discuss the hashtags that their classmates create.

For this particular round of history hashtag fan club, I used four big ideas from my Jamestown Unit: Susan Constant, the Powhatan Nation, James Fort, and John Smith.

You can use any social studies topic that you want your students to review. This activity is very adjustable and customizable.

Final tip – If you have a little wall space in your classroom, you might consider starting a #HistoryHashtagWallofFame. Every time you do this hashtag activity, choose a couple of your very favorites and add them to the wall of fame that grows all year long!
