Teaching the American Revolution is exciting, and one of my students’ favorite activities is making a mask letter.
In my opinion, American Revolution units should include at least a taste of the spies and spy tricks used to pass information and ultimately win independence.
Mask letters were handwritten letters that used two separate pieces: the letter and a mask. The message intended for the reader was written within the borders of the mask. Then, the mask was removed and the letter was completed to disguise its true meaning. Generally, spies would send the mask and letter separately to prevent the enemy from discovering the true message of the letter.
In the video below, I will explain how to help students create mask letters.
